Hotels played a vital role in Australian communities throughout the Nineteenth century and until the emergence of licenced clubs especially after poker machines were allowed in clubs rather than hotels in 1956; There were eight hotels in central Wollongong at various times and most of the coal mining villages had a hotel. By 2025, there were only 3 hotels in central Wollongong. Many of the licenced clubs established to cater for the needs of particular sections of the community had also closed.
