!! Market St was built in stages between 1865 and 1882 to house the telegraph and postal services. During the first twenty years of its existence, the building was situated within the commercial area of Wollongong. Proximity to the harbour and the coastal road from Bulli Pass meant that most residents and visitors passed its door. With the improvement of roads down the escarpment, and a more direct route from the foot of Bulli Pass to Wollongong township, traffic entered the town at the Keira and Crown St junction. The arrival of the railway in 1889 encouraged the development of Crown St as the main business area.
The Post Office moved to 91 Crown St in 1892. The Market St building was used to house a variety of NSW government offices until 1966 when it became the Illawarra Museum.
